Commercial Funding, Visit Scotland, £3000, New Futures: Scottish Tourism in 2030. Glasgow Caledonian University 2008
2008 - 2008

Description VisitScotland has been engaged in scenario planning with the Moffat Centre since 2001 constructing scenarios, undertaking environmental scanning and producing economic models. Between 2005/07, Visit Scotland formed a scenario planning group in order to hypothesise what tourism might look like between 2015 and 2030. The success in that process helped construct the Tourism Framework for Change document, an ambitious growth strategy.

The purpose of this latest research exercise is to develop upon the existing ‘futures’ work of VisitScotland.

The objectives of the research were as follows:

• To construct three scenarios about Scottish tourism in 2030 to be used by the scenario planning consortium and VisitScotland. The scenarios need to be interpreted in such a way as to suggest actionable responses in a sustainable manner from VisitScotland, Scottish Tourism and consortium members.
• To use a back casting process in order to analyse the 2030 New Futures scenarios against the 2015 ambitions target

This report incorporated findings from four tourism stakeholder workshops lead by VisitScotland and the Moffat Centre that took place over 2 days. The report suggests scenarios that are commercially viable, feasible and sustainable. It presents a clear set of actionable responses that relate to the structure of Scottish tourism and its markets, products and consumers. These are directly informed by the scenarios and workshops.

Commercial Funding, Visit Britain, £3,000, A case study analysis of the structures and budgets of National Tourism Organisations. Glasgow Caledonian University,
2008 - 2008

Description The UK Leisure and Tourism sector is very fragmented at government and industry level covering a wide and diverse range of products. Tourist boards and strategic authorities are important for the thousands of small enterprises that provide accommodation, food, attractions and travel services to tourists in Britain. These organisations provide a focal point for marketing to incoming visitors and a voice on industry issues.

This research presented findings from a 6 week period of desk research and semi structured interviews with key tourism stakeholders (including senior staff from within NTOs) from

• Canada
• Germany
• Australia
• New Zealand
• South Africa
• France

The report analysed the remit, positioning and funding of each country’s NTO and other relevant tourism organisations. It provided an understanding of each NTO’s role in advising government on tourism policy issues. The report explores how the tourism industry organises itself in order to lobby government for improvements to infrastructure that supports tourism to the benefit of the industry.

2025

Recognition Type Conference Organising Activity
Description The purpose of this interdisciplinary knowledge exchange project is to host a symposium that will bring together scholars and practitioners involved in penal heritage. The Penal Heritage Symposium, to occur at Shrewsbury Prison (UK), intends to be the first iteration of a future larger biennial conference – co-hosted by Oxford Brookes University, Robert Gordon University and Edinburgh Napier University, with support of Cove Group Ltd.
The aim of the Symposium is to promote interdisciplinary work between scholars and industry practitioners to produce future impact studies and efforts pertaining to the way in which penal heritage is used (and abused) for the experience economy. This aim will be possible through several key objectives.
•To will explore and understand society’s use of and responses to penal heritage.
•To promote the development of knowledge exchange activities between scholars and practitioners.
•To advance dialogue around creative approaches to future uses of penal heritage.
These objectives will be possible through the Symposium’s focus on the impact of penal heritage on society, culture and the experience economy, with particular attention given to how penal heritage shapes our understandings of the penal system, reform, and human rights. In achieving the aim and objectives listed, the Symposium will serve as a foundation for the promotion and production of a global network to support the sharing of knowledge relating to penal heritage research and practice.
This symposium will bring together penal heritage scholars and practitioners from around the globe, including research active and teaching academics, postgraduate students, industry professionals, and other professionals interested in or who work with penal heritage. In particular, the Symposium will seek to involve the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience - the only global network of historic sites, museums, and memory initiatives that connects past struggles to today's movements for human rights.
