Abstract

Pre-arrival shared reading is currently flavour-of-the-month, with many universities actively considering involvement. How to frame the activity can be more contentious – should this be managed within organisational marketing, or pedagogic research? Kingston and Edinburgh Napier went for maximum complication, establishing a research project into student engagement, retention and progression within two establishments, 400+ miles apart. We shared bespoke editions of the same book, access to the author, and all processes and outcomes within our similar but distinct populations. In this session we offer the chance to share the key issues we had to tackle – and reflect on what was learned.
