Afterimage: Is there such thing as Southeast Asian Photography?

Abstract

A survey of contemporary photography practice in Southeast Asia inevitably invites reflection the idea of the region as an interconnected geopolitical and cultural territory. As such, geographical proximity should, hypothetically, play a determinant role in social and cultural processes, which in turn define a set of commonalities shared among photographic works from the region. At the same time, exploring commonalities in an overwhelmingly variegated region -- without dominant language, religion or political system -- such as Southeast Asia seems like an inconceivable marriage. Therefore, the relevance to localize contemporary practice in a territorial logic is in question, when digital proximity surpasses the geographical one.
