Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of online learning globally, prompting Private Education Institutions (PEIs) in Singapore to increasingly rely on this mode of delivery. However, the implementation of online learning innovations within these institutions faces significant challenges, including educator resistance to change, limited resources and technology, insufficient organizational support, concerns over quality and perception, and difficulties with pedagogical adaptation and student engagement. This doctoral research explores the challenges and enablers of adopting online learning innovations in Singapore's PEIs from a managerial perspective. By conducting primary research with PEI managers and educators and analyzing the findings through the lens of Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DoIT), this study addresses existing gaps in the literature on online learning adoption in PEIs. The research contributes to theory by identifying key factors influencing innovation adoption, such as innovation characteristics, communication channels, time and resource management, social systems, and the roles of opinion leaders and change agents. Practically, the study offers actionable recommendations to enhance the adoption of online learning, including strategies for aligning with stakeholder needs, improving communication, and developing educator competencies. Additionally, the research highlights the importance of cultivating a supportive organizational culture and engaging key opinion leaders to facilitate the adoption process. Although focused on Singapore's PEIs, the findings have broader implications for educational institutions globally, offering insights for more effective online learning implementations and improved educational outcomes. Future research directions include longitudinal studies on the impact of online learning innovations on student outcomes, organizational change management, faculty development, and policy formulation.
