Abstract
An increasing quantity of wood is recovered from demolitions, presenting opportunities for enhanced value through reusing or recycling in structural uses. Prior to utilizing timber for structural applications, it is essential to subject it to a grading process. The recovered timber often falls short of meeting the standard requirements for new timber grading define in the standards EN 14081, especially timber source identification. Even if it manages to meet these standards, the rejection rate is likely to be quite high. A new standardize framework different than the current new timber framework is needed for recovered timber grading. The present work explains the issues taking into account for that standard proposal, like combine machine grading and visual parameters, avoid defining new strength classes for recovered timber using instead a resistance profile of 3 or 4 properties code and visual override aspects not detected for machine and mainly from carpentry joints origin. Furthermore, some features not related with timber mechanical properties as nails, dimensions, etc. but affecting reusability possibilities are discussed.
