Abstract
Roof gardens have a significant role on environmental, economic, and social factors, including the reduction of carbon dioxide and increase the amounts of oxygen in the atmosphere, decrease the pollution and air-cooling, these benefits are important in sustainable buildings practice. This study is conducted to (i) evaluate the use of Roof gardens in Jubail Industrial City-Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia ii) Discuss the benefits and challenges in using Roof gardens iii) suggest a simple and effective model for Roof gardens in Jubail Industrial City.
A Questionnaire case study is used to evaluate information about knowledge, design, application and barriers that prevent Jubail industrial city residents from using Roof gardens in their buildings, results indicated that some barriers prevent the citizen from applying this practice, therefore a suitable design suggested that makes Roof gardens practical and easy to apply. This study provided a simple and effective model for Roof gardens in Jubail Industrial City base on portable gardens (in containers) instead of constructing a garden. Important factors in portable gardens are also discussed such as planting containers in term of size and dimension as well as the choice of suitable soil for the plants growing. The plants selection is an important factor in successful Roof gardens. The study suggested that native plant, desert plants, and some types of vegetables, herbs can be used for Roof gardens and irrigation can be done by using an atmospheric water generator.
