Sustainable mountain bike trails: towards a holistic approach
Campbell, Tom
Authors
Abstract
This chapter outlines current approaches towards creating and promoting more sustainable mountain bike trails, and orients these within contemporary theoretical conceptualisations of sustainability. The value of practical initiatives that draw upon existing cultures, including trail builder education and accreditation, mobilisation of volunteers through trail associations, industry-led initiatives, and promotion of greater access to trails closer to home, is highlighted. Throughout the chapter, I argue that the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours of mountain bikers are central to this issue and that a more holistic approach, encompassing both inner and outer dimensions of sustainability, is necessary to fully capitalise on pro-environmental attitudes.
