Abstract

This research delves into the intricate relationship between mountain auditory environments and the mountaineering experience, shedding light on the influence of individual sounds and overall soundscapes. While existing studies acknowledge the positive impact of natural sounds on well-being, tourism, conservation, and restoration, gaps in data hinder generalisation and connectivity mapping across mountain ranges. Addressing these gaps requires the collection of extensive, accurate data through soundfield recording, in-situ and lab soundscape assessment, and long-term monitoring.
Through an online survey and thematic analysis involving 219 participants from 21 countries, predominantly experienced mountaineers, this study investigates mountaineers' perception of mountain soundscapes and their role in safety and navigation. Results indicate that soundscapes significantly enhance overall mountain experiences by aiding in wildlife identification, marking changing seasons, and providing a sense of scale. Participants highlighted the tranquility and enjoyment derived from "silence" and natural sounds, while also noting their utility in understanding the landscape and ensuring safety against potential hazards such as avalanches and rockfalls.
Furthermore, sound played a multifaceted role in outdoor navigation, contributing to emotional experiences and effective route finding. The findings underscore the importance of sound in enhancing safety, fostering emotional connections with nature, and facilitating efficient navigation during mountaineering endeavours. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of soundscapes in mountain environments and emphasises the need for comprehensive data collection to support informed decision-making and conservation efforts in these fragile ecosystems.
