Abstract
The early-career sport and exercise psychologist will encounter a multitude of opportunities to gain experience and develop their practice. For many aspiring practitioners, securing viable placements will be an abrupt and unchartered introduction to self-employment and consultancy. During this time, questions will undoubtedly arise; how do I value my services, is it reasonable to work for free, is this within my competence, and can I afford to accept this opportunity? Perhaps most critical is the question of setting one's own value on their applied work. This is necessary not only to establish a healthy career but also in upholding and advancing the reputation of the profession. There is no correct way to choose the ‘right’ opportunities, but by reflecting on their values, circumstances, and aspirations, practitioners can work towards making the best decisions for them and their careers. This chapter will explore and unpick such considerations to encourage trainee and early-career practitioners to make informed decisions when establishing and advancing their portfolios.
