In Scotland, Deaf culture has been unacknowledged by the Creative Industries where minority cultural groups are still poorly represented by creative sector funding streams. While the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017 included activity from both Disability History Scotland and BEMIS Scotland to enhance the participation of Scotland’s minority cultures, there was little that represented the social, cultural and linguistic lives of Scotland’s Deaf communities. This workshop reflects upon how a translingual approach to curating conversations about and through heritage-making opened up new ways of developing critical conversations with Deaf artists, historians and community participants.
