Abstract

The National Transputer Support Centre is an independent parallel processing consultancy specialising in large scale data management and parallel databases. We were approached recently by the Home Office to investigate the data management aspects of Automatic Fingerprint Recognition (AFR), and to report on design issues and technology available to support systems of varying sizes, ranging from small regional systems up to centralised national systems for large countries such as the USA. In particular, we were asked to investigate the extent to which a single design could be applied to systems of a wide range of sizes. Our conclusions pointed to a massively parallel architecture as being the only technology capable of offering a solution. In this paper we use this application to illustrate the advantages that such architectures can offer in problems of very large scale such as those found in the area of criminal justice.
