Abstract

A water pump system for use in borehole, the pump system comprising a pumping chamber or cylinder having piston configured to reciprocate in a direction substantially perpendicular to the borehole axis. The piston may be elongate having a major dimension, wherein the major dimension of the piston had is substantially parallel to the major dimension of the pump housing. A renewable power source, such as a solar powered generator, a wind powered generator, a geothermal powered generator or an anaerobic digestor, can be used to drive said motion of a piston using an electrical motor located within the borehole. The reciprocating piston motion perpendicular to a vertical borehole axis allows energy to be saved by avoiding vertical piston motion, and a lower-power renewable energy supply can therefore be used.
