Prof Susan Dawkes
Biography | Professor Susan Dawkes is a registered nurse who has spent over twenty years working with cardiology patients in Scotland and Canada. Her clinical roles included nursing in acute cardiology units in and latterly working as a specialist nurse in cardiac rehabilitation. Susan began her career in higher education at the University of Edinburgh and went on to join the School of Health and Social Care (formerly School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Care) at Edinburgh Napier University from 2004 to 2020 where she held various roles, latterly Professor of Nursing and cardiovascular Health / Head of Learning and Teaching. In 2020 Susan became the Dean of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedic Practice at Robert Gordon University and led the school there until September 2024. Susan has returned to Edinburgh Napier University and taken up the position of Dean of the School of Health and Social Care / Professor of Nursing and Cardiovascular Health. Susan has held various national and international positions. These have included being the President of the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) where Susan led the development of the 2023 BACPR Standards and Core Components of rehabilitation. Susan was also the UK lead on the International Council for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation. In these roles Susan supported healthcare professionals to deliver the best cardiovascular rehabilitation and to use strategies to promote primary prevention of the disease. Currently, Susan is the Convenor of both the Council of Deans Health in Scotland and also the National Research Advisory Group for professions excluding medicine and dentistry. Susan also is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Society of cardiology Association for Cardiovascular Nurses and Allied Professions (ACNAP). |

Research Interests | My interests include: coronary heart disease (CHD), self-management of long-term conditions (particularly CHD), secondary prevention of CHD, psychological effects of having a long-term physical condition and how they impact on quality of life, how technology can support patients in managing long-term conditions. |
Teaching and Learning | I was the Head of Learning and Teaching in the School of Health and Social Care at Edinburgh Napier University with leadership of all credit bearing programmes. I have experience of teaching a range of subjects to students from undergraduate level up to doctoral level both at home and overseas, particularly in South-East Asia. Susan currently supports a number of postgraduate research students |
