Abstract

The construction industry is widely recognized for its high energy consumption and carbon emissions in the built environment. This recognition is attributable to the underperformance of existing buildings within the built environment. Retrofitting buildings has become an essential approach to improving the performance of buildings in terms of thermal comfort and energy efficiency to promote a sustainable built environment. However, various empirical studies and holistic reviews by the research community have been conducted from a global and regional perspective regarding building retrofitting in emerging economies. As a result, this present study aims to synthesize the research upshots of building retrofitting at the developing economic countries level with a core on presenting the achievement of building retrofitting. In this light, the present study offers a scoping overview of the intellectual research on building retrofitting obtained from Web of Science and Scopus from 2010 to 2023, which is needed to promote an all-inclusive building retrofitting research from a countrywide standpoint. The findings of the review show that building retrofitting has been efficient in balancing three perspectives of construction, namely, carbon emission reduction, energy savings, and the financial costs of the building’s lifecycle time. This review is a helpful resource for building professionals, academia and policymakers in promoting retrofitting buildings to increase construction projects' efficiency, quality, and sustainability.
