Mitigating the Coexistence Technique in Wireless Body Area Networks By Using Superframe Interleaving

Abstract

This paper studies the issues of coexistence in a homogenous network environment that constitutes a wireless body area network (WBANs). IEEE 802.15.6 specially designed a network for the human body. IEEE 802.15.6 provide three different types of techniques to avoid the interference issue. These techniques do not provide a proper solution for avoiding coexistence. We focus on Superframe interleaving technique which is provided by IEEE 802.15.6. Our research aims to mitigate the interference that exists in multiple BANs. IEEE 802.15.6 mitigates the interference in two BANs by using Superframe interleaving technique. In this study, we have proposed two schemes for solving the coexistence issue by using active Superframe interleaving technique. The first scheme is extended IEEE 802.15.6 and second scheme is dynamic extended IEEE 802.15.6. In extended scheme, the duration of the Superframe is fixed. The dynamic active Superframe interleaving scheme adjusts the Superframe of interfering BANs according to the traffic load observed in each BAN. Therefore, instead of assigning the duration of the Superframe fix to each BAN, the duration is assigned according to the traffic requirement of each network. We compare the performance of both schemes using OPNET simulator. The simulation results show the performance of both schemes and analyze the impact of parameters.
