Preparing a paediatric palliative care workforce
Malcolm, Cari; McGirr, Debbie; Grant, Jayne
Abstract
Workshop objectives: This workshop is based on the results and recommendations of an extensive scoping project which aimed to develop an evidence based education strategy for children’s hospice and palliative care. It will be a dynamic and interactive session where following a brief 10 minute presentation of the project findings by the two presenters, delegates will have the opportunity to discuss and debate the implications for their practice. Education together with research and clinical practice is essential to ensure the continued development of an effective and responsive workforce equipped to meet the palliative care needs of children and their families both now and in the future. Key recommendations from the research findings will form the focus of discussions and engage the audience in how we can share ideas and best practice and support the development of future leaders in palliative care.
Target audience: This workshop would be of interest to a range of health and social care professionals, children’s hospice staff, educators, and families with experience in children’s palliative care.
Conclusion: The requirement for a coherent evidence-informed education strategy was evident. Education together with research and clinical practice is essential to ensure the continued development of an effective and responsive workforce equipped to meet the palliative care needs of children and their families both now and in the future.
